Safe holiday shopping

The hustle and bustle of the holidays often creates a sense of urgency as we hunt for bargains and search for last-minute gifts. Packed parking lots, crowded downtown streets and busy shopping malls can cause stress, frustration and even make us susceptible to criminals looking for their own holiday cheer.
Here are some tips on how to ensure a safe and joyous holiday season:
- Stay alert and always be aware of your surroundings. If you feel uncomfortable because someone may be following you, wait inside the store or ask a security guard to escort you to your car.
- Park in well-lighted areas; be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags in the trunk. If you don’t have a trunk, use a blanket to conceal your valuables. The “out of sight, out of mind” cliché has a true meaning here.
- Carry a purse close to your body and carry wallets in your front pocket. Don’t overburden yourself with packages—it’s ok to store your purchases in the trunk until the shopping is done.
- Be suspicious of any strangers that may approach you, particularly in parking garages and parking lots. Don’t be afraid to yell out for help if you feel threatened.
- Try to have your keys in hand when walking to your car. The panic button can be pressed to alert bystanders there is a problem or the keys can be used to help defend yourself.
- Go shopping with friends or family members. There is truth to the strategy of “safety in numbers”, plus your experience will most likely be more enjoyable.
- Road rage incidents can turn ugly and dangerous very quickly. Pack your patience and realize that the other driver probably didn’t intend to be unsafe or thoughtless. It’s much better to avoid a crash, or worse yet, a physical confrontation than to let the situation escalate.
- Give yourself extra time to get to your destinations, listen to holiday music and acknowledge that this is a stressful time for everyone. If another driver is creating an unsafe situation, drive to a well-populated area, stay in your vehicle and call 911.
- Let the police resolve any issues.
- Don’t let the spirit of giving and the excitement that comes with finding that perfect gift lull you into a false sense of security.
