Safety tips for drivers on Walk to School Day
Walk to School Day was created with the goal of building awareness of the importance of traffic safety and changing behaviors. School community members walk together to school as a reminder that people walking and driving have to adhere to the rules of the road. Walk to School Day is an important step in moving toward a culture where even one death on our streets in unacceptable.
Safety tips for drivers to consider on Walk to School day and everyday:
- Slow down and adhere to rules within school zones. Reducing your speed will also increase your reaction time and make it easier to quickly stop your vehicle if a child darts into traffic.
- Be alert to children’s unpredictable behavior.
- Do not text or talk on your cell phone while driving. Stay focused on the task at hand.
- Don’t block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. This forces pedestrians to go around you and could put them in harms way.
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
- Always stop for a school crossing guard holding up a stop sign.
- Give children the right of way in crosswalks and school zones.
